What Does a Shiatsu Practitioner Do ?

A shiatsu practitioner works with the body’s energy system to restore balance and promote healing. Rooted in Traditional Japanese Medicine, shiatsu is based on the concept that the body contains a vital life force called Ki. When Ki flows freely through the body, we feel energized, balanced, and healthy. When it becomes blocked or depleted, physical and emotional symptoms begin to appear.

Like acupuncture, traditional shiatsu massage aims to free blockages in the Ki flow and restore energy to areas where it is low — but without needles. Instead, a shiatsu practitioner uses their hands, thumbs, palms, and sometimes elbows to apply sustained, rhythmic pressure along the body’s energy pathways.

A shiatsu specialist does this by applying pressure and stretching specific points along the body’s meridian channels — the pathways through which Ki flows. There are 12 main meridians in the body, each connected to a specific organ system. By working along these channels, a shiatsu therapist can influence not only the area being treated, but the entire corresponding system — which is why shiatsu often produces effects that go well beyond simple muscle relief.

The result is a deeply therapeutic experience that addresses both physical and emotional well-being. Clients often report feeling a profound sense of calm and heaviness during the session, followed by increased energy, mental clarity, and reduced pain in the days that follow. Unlike many forms of massage, the benefits of shiatsu tend to build over time — each session deepening the body’s capacity to heal and rebalance itself.

Unlike conventional massage, shiatsu is :

  • Performed on a futon on the floor
  • Done fully clothed (comfortable, loose clothing recommended)
  • Focused on the whole body and its energy system, not just the area of pain
  • A holistic health and wellbeing approach that treats the root cause, not just the symptoms

What Clients Say About Our Shiatsu Practitioner

« I’ve had Shiatsu massage before out East, so when I moved out West, I was thrilled to find Daniel Thibeault — Shiatsu Massage Therapist in St. Henri, literally next door to the metro. Shiatsu practitioners are rare in the West end of Montreal, so finding him was a real treat. He knows his Shiatsu and is a great listener who then works thoroughly, compassionately, and professionally, always asking if everything is all right along the way. I feel younger and lighter every time I leave. »
